Paul L. Schmid, 78, of Brewerton, died June 26, 2007, at St. Joseph's Hospital. He leaves countless family and friends with cherished memories of a dedicated, generous and devoted individual.
Paul retired in 1991 as the second generation owner of Rudy Schmid Inc. after serving the company for more than fifty years. During his ownership, he grew the business and relocated the Pastime Drive and Plum Street shops to the current location on Hiawatha Blvd. He was present to greet those in attendance at the company's 75th Anniversary celebration in October 2005. Paul was a founding member of the Syracuse Auto Rebuilders Association.
Paul loved golf and was a member at McConnellsville Country Club and Rogues Roost Golf Club. Paul was an avid water skier and coordinated the NYS water ski championships on Onondaga Lake for 10 years as well as orchestrating ski shows on Oneida Lake.
Paul served on the Town of Lysander Variance Board and was an advocate for improvements of the lock system as a member of the Central New York Waterways Association. He had been an 8-year member of the National Guard, as lead welder of the motor pool.
He was president of the Pastime Athletic club where he was a member for 50 years, and bowled in two leagues. He was a long-time member of both the Arion Stein Club and the Swiss Club.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's parish, Baldwinsville and most recently St. Agnes in Brewerton. He is pre-deceased by parents Rudy and Mary (Kraus) Schmid.
Survivors: His wife of 52 years Dorothy “Sis” Wirth, daughters, Judy Schmid (Stewart Koenig), Joyce Schmid Placito, Jill Schmid, Paula Schmid Begel (Ed Begel), Diane Schmid McCall (Steve McCall), Mary Schmid Close (Dave Close), sons, P.J. Schmid (Kimberly), Dan Schmid (Carrie), grandchildren, Sean Garland, Todd Close, Maura Koenig, Margaret Placito, Tim McCall, Brandon Close, Julia Schmid, Jeff Placito, Rob McCall, Melanie Begel, Paul Schmid, Ethan Schmid, Jacob Rudy Schmid, Veronica Close, sister Margaret (Schmid) Gang, brother George Schmid, both of East Syracuse and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
